Meron, who was a steward at Nabol Hold, became Lord Holder after the death of Fax in 2505.
Biography[]
Late in the Eighth Interval, Meron accompanied a number of Lord Holders and their troops on an expedition to Benden Weyr, to formally stop the practice of tithing to the Weyrs. The army was convinced to submit after the dragonriders kidnapped the wives of the Lord Holders. Meron was the least willing member of the group to capitulate.
In the early years of the Ninth Pass, Meron became involved with Kylara, senior weyrwoman of Southern Weyr. While there, Meron was the first to impress a fire lizard, after Kylara brought him a clutch of eggs. Following the banishment of the Oldtimers to the Southern Continent, Kylara transferred to High Reaches Weyr, allowing Meron to be closer to her. The day after the move, Meron and Kylara met, with their subsequent passions causing Kylara's Prideth to rise for a mating flight. Since Brekke's Wirenth, one of High Reaches' new junior queens, had risen minutes earlier, the resulting battle between the queens caused both queens to go between forever. Meron was blamed by many people for his role in the loss, but was not penalized, despite the desire of many dragonriders. While the Red Star was being viewed through the distance-viewer that Wansor had setup, Meron tried to take as much time at the scope as he could manage. He was eventually forced to return home.
In his later years, Meron began trading secretly with the exiled Oldtimers, requesting fire lizard eggs in exchange for goods from the north. Eventually, he began to suffer from a wasting sickness that caused him excruciating pain and caused his rooms to stink with a sweet, cloying, sickly smell that induced nausea. Even though he frequently summoned Masterhealer Oldive to attend him, little could be done. Despite his ill health, Meron refused to name a successor, sparking fears of fighting over Nabol Hold after his demise.
At the Gather organized to celebrate Lord Holder Groghe's Spring Festival, Meron was attended on his walk by Hittet, who described himself as «of the Blood», as did numerous other heirs all hoping to be named Lord Holder. Masterharper Robinton and T'bor, Weyrleader of High Reaches Weyr, banded together to force Meron to name his heir by withholding his medication. In addition, they tricked him into naming their preferred heir by making Meron believe that they didn't want the person named. Fooled, Meron named Deckter, a distant relative who ran a carting business, as his heir. With Meron's death minutes after naming his successor, Sebell and Menolly were able to turn their attention to Piemur, who was missing. Later, it was learned that it was Piemur who had stolen Meron's gold fire lizard egg.
Appearance and Personality[]
Described as a sharp-faced man, Lord Meron was considered to be a perverted individual. He was prone to fits of temper and enjoyed thinking up cruel and unusual punishments for miscreants in his Hold. Meron had a major dislike of the Weyrs, with the only exceptions being Kylara and the Oldtimers. Near the end of his life, he suffered from a wasting disease, described by Sebell as «a very proper disease to fit Lord Meron’'s . . . peculiar ways!»
It was said that none of Meron's daughters would ever be pretty, «taking after their sire as they all seem to have had the misfortune to do.»
