Benden Weyr Southern Weyr

K'van was a dragonrider at Benden Weyr and Weyrleader at Southern Weyr during the Ninth Pass. His dragon was bronze Heth, and his weyrmate was Adrea.

Biography[]

Weyr Life and Impression[]

Keevan was born at Benden Weyr, a son of brown rider K'last, and became a candidate for the next Impression at barely 12 Turns. Although reassured by his foster mother that all her fosterlings made dragon rider, Keevan was desperate to Impress on his first attempt, largely because, as the smallest and youngest of the candidates, he was being bullied by some of the older ones, notably Beterli (who publicly called him «babe»).

Keevan was attacked by Beterli right before the Impression and, although Beterli was disciplined and expelled from the position of candidate, Keevan had broken his leg and was not expected to participate in the Hatching. Nevertheless, he managed to get himself out of bed and to the Hatching Ground, where a single bronze hatchling was trying to leave the grounds without making Impression. At first, Keevan thought he was being teased by the older boys for showing up in such a frightful state; but, he then realized that he was, in fact, hearing the voice of the newly hatched dragonet, Heth, in his head. Thus, he became a bronze rider and, according to F'lar, «one of the bravest». His name was shortened to the ritual honorific of K'van.

Weyrling Turns[]

While still a weyrling, K'van and Heth answered a call for assistance from a young woman named Aramina, who had the ability to hear all dragons. After assisting in the removal of a wagon from atop of Aramina's father Dowell, K'van left to disperse a group of raiders. K'van later arrived with T'gellan and Mirrim in tow, to help Aramina's holdless family reach shelter before going to fight Thread.

The next day, K'van arrived at the shelter with F'lar, F'nor, and Lord Holder Asgenar of Lemos Hold, who informed Aramina's family that the raiders were still nearby. Aramina revealed to the group that the raiders were actually chasing her, for her ability to hear all dragons. Lord Asgenar announced his intention to capture the raider's leader, Thella. K'van was left at the shelter along with guards for protection. K'van and Heth later foiled an attempt to kidnap Aramina, but were unable to actually capture the kidnappers.

Becoming Weyrleader[]

Following D'ram's resignation from the Weyrleadership of Southern Weyr, K'van's Heth outflew every bronze on Pern to mate with Adrea's queen Beljeth, making K'van Weyrleader at Southern. Although a good leader, his youth caused him to be underestimated sometimes, especially by Southern Hold's Lord Toric. K'van eventually went to F'lar, explaining that first Toric tried to bully him into helping him retake Big Island from the squatter Denol, in spite of the fact that the Weyrs are not supposed to involve themselves in Holder disputes. After being rebuked by the Weyrleader, Toric tried to undermine K'van's leadership by trying to bribe some of his riders to transport men to the island, but they remained loyal to K'van. F'lar found Toric's actions to be outrageous and congratulated K'van on his stance.

Later, K'van reported to F'lar and Lessa that Toric was illegally extending his hold. K'van, F'lar and Lessa coordinated a demonstration that put the mutinous lord holder in his place. Although Toric tried to pay K'van back for this by threatening to cut contacts with Southern Weyr, K'van informed him that the dragonfolk had already relocated to a place they liked better.

Weyrhold[]

While the dragonriders were looking for weyrholds on the Southern Continent, K'van found one on his first sweep which appealed to both K'van and his weyrmate Adrea.

Appearance[]

As a child, Keevan was short, but later grew into his height.

Personality[]

As an adult, K'van was a capable Weyrleader. He was sometimes under-estimated because of his youth, but remained firm even in the face of threats. He held a tenuous relationship with Toric, Lord Holder of Southern Hold, partly due to Toric's desire to extend his hold's borders by whatever means possible and attempts to involve dragonriders in Hold politics.
