The ability to hear all dragons was rare. While most people could hear a dragon if it chose to speak to them, someone who could hear all dragons could freely communicate with any dragon.

Description[]

Under normal circumstances, a rider could only communicate telepathically with their own dragon, or in some cases, the dragon bonded to their weyrmate. Meanwhile, a nonrider could only hear a dragon if it chose to speak with them, which was rare. However, some humans could freely communicate telepathically with any dragon. The ability to hear all dragons was considered a valuable one, as it allowed for easier communication and coordination of a Weyr. Otherwise, riders were required to relay orders or instructions by having their dragon communicate with the dragon of the target rider. All known people with the ability have been women, and most were riders of Queen dragons.

History[]

First Pass[]

Torene, weyrwoman at Fort Weyr and later Weyrwoman of Benden Weyr, could hear all dragons. While at Fort, she made sure to assure Sean Connell and Sorka Hanrahan that she didn't eavesdrop on draconic conversations.

Second Interval/Third Pass[]

Lorana could hear all dragons. This ability caused her great pain whenever a dragon died during Threadfall or of the dragon sickness. It did, however, allow her to have a clear idea of wherever she was in time.

Ninth Pass[]

Three women of the Ninth Pass could hear all dragons. Lessa, the Weyrwoman of Benden Weyr, could hear all dragons and could telepathically nudge people to do what she wanted. She initially did not realize that the ability to hear all dragons was a unique ability and thus, didn't mention it until F'lar brought up the issue of communication during Threadfall. Lessa made regular use of her abilities. In her absence, F'lar sometimes noted how much more difficult communication could be.

Brekke of Southern, High Reaches and later Benden Weyr could hear all dragons and fire lizards, which was a comfort to her after she lost her dragon Wirenth. Her ability led Lessa to attempt to have her reimpress a queen, but the attempt failed. Despite no longer being a rider, Brekke remained popular with most dragons, and they would readily assist her when needed.

Aramina could hear all dragons, but was unable to tune out the dragons' constant chatter and nearly driven mad. She was the target of Thella, who wanted to use Aramina to help her keep clear of dragons. Aramina was captured by Thella, and after her rescue she wanted to be as far from dragons as possible, so she fled to the Southern Continent, never Impressing a dragon.
