Telgar Hold

Larad was Lord Holder of Telgar Hold late in the Eighth Interval early in the Ninth Pass. Through Telgar Hold's Bloodline, he was a descendant of Sallah Telgar.

Biography[]

Early Life[]

Larad and Asgenar (who called him Lar) were both fostered by Lord Holder Corman at Keroon Hold. Larad became close friends with both men.

Larad, who was present at the Telgar Hold Gather at which Gifflen, one of Fax's captains, injured Robinton then killed F'lon in a duel, informed his father Lord Holder Tarathel of what had happened.

Lord Holder[]

Larad became Lord Holder at 15 Turns and was confirmed as Lord Holder over his sister Thella, who was 11 months older.

Late in the Eighth Interval, and due to the belief that threadfall would not return, Larad led a group of disgrunted Lord Holders to Benden Weyr, with the intention of ending the tithes required by the weyr. However, he and the other Lord Holders were intimidated into retreating when Benden Weyr's new Weyrleader F'lar had his riders kidnap the Lord Holder's wives and threaten to keep them until the tithes were delivered.

After the return of Thread, Larad became a firm supporter of Benden Weyr against the Oldtimers, as Benden respected the rights of both Hold and Craft while the Oldtimers did not. During the wedding of Larad's sister to Asgenar, at which F'lon was killed by Fax's captain, Larad publicly confirmed his support for Benden's leadership. Larad was initially somewhat resistant to the suggestion of using Grubs to protect the land and forests from Thread, but became amenable after a demonstration.

After the discovery of AIVAS, Larad became a supporter of the innovations it introduced, and of AIVAS's promise to eliminate Thread forever. AIVAS's stored knowledge of early Pern history, and its ability to restore faded records, led to the discovery that Larad and his entire bloodline were the descendents of Sallah Telgar, an early settler who had sacrificed herself to save Pern. When Sallah's body was retrieved from the bridge of the Yokohama, Larad and his wife Jissamy organized a formal funeral ceremony to honor her.

Later, when Larad learned that a group of men were plotting to kidnap retired Masterharper Robinton, he informed the new MasterHarper Sebell at a meeting with Asgenar. After the kidnapping took place at a Ruatha Hold Gather, both Larad and Asgenar regretted not having taken action against the conspirators, one of whom was Lord Holder Sigomal. When Robinton was rescued and returned, both Larad and Asgenar were actively plotting an attack against the conspirators, known by most as the abominators.

In the years after AIVAS's self-imposed shutdown, Larad continued to rule Telgar Hold. Following the Fireball Flood, he offered to support an observatory that was to be constructed at his hold to help monitor other asteroids.

Personality and traits[]

According to Lord Asgenar, Larad was a take-charge kind of person, even when he was a fosterling. Larad cared deeply for his family and was a close friend to Asgenar. Though he, like many Lord Holders, was initially disdainful of the weyrs, he became a supporter after Thread returned. Despite being distrustful of Grubs, it was later noted that he was generally quite open to new projects and innovations, such as AIVAS's technology and observatories.

Note[]

Jissamy was said to have been Lord Larad's wife in All the Weyrs of Pern. Dulsay was said to have been Lord Larad's wife in both The Renegades of Pern and The Skies of Pern.
