A small group of men were deeply dissatisfied with their lives in the [Southern] Weyr, ill at ease and increasingly dogged in their wish for change. Their disquiet could be felt as a palpable energy by the other members of the Weyr and was beginning to fester and spread, like a disease.

Dragon's Code is a book in the Dragonriders of Pern series by Anne McCaffrey. It was written by her daughter, Gigi McCaffrey. Dragon's Code was first published by Ballantine Books in October 2018.

In honor of the fiftieth anniversary of the Dragonriders of Pern series, Gigi does her mother proud, adding to the family tradition of spinning unputdownable tales that recount the adventures of the brave inhabitants of a distant planet who battle the pitiless adversary known as Thread.

Synopsis[]

The last time Thread attacked Pern, the world was unprepared for the fight—until the Oldtimers appeared. These courageous dragonriders arrived from the past, traveling four hundred years to help their descendants survive. But the collision of past and present took its toll. While most of the displaced rescuers adapted to their new reality, others could not abide the jarring change and found themselves in soul-crushing exile, where unhappiness and resentment seethed.

Piemur, a journeyman harper, also feels displaced, cast adrift by the loss of his spectacular boyhood voice and uncertain of his future. But when the Masterharper of Pern sees promise in the young man and sends him undercover among the exiled Oldtimers, Piemur senses the looming catastrophe that threatens the balance of power between the Weyrs and Holds of Pern.

When the unthinkable happens, Piemur must rise to the challenge to avert disaster and restore honor to the dragons and dragonriders of Pern. Because now, in a world already beset by Thread, another, more insidious danger looms: For the first time in living memory, dragons may be on the verge of fighting dragons.

Inconsistencies[]

Toric is called the Lord Holder, although at the beginning of the this novel (the 14th turn or the beginning of the 15th turn) he does not yet have a title. The title of Lord was bestowed upon him at the end of the 15th turn, after the discovery of the shuttle in the Ship Meadow and the maps of the Southern Continent in them. Shortly before this, Jaxom specifically emphasizes that Toric has no title.

«Holder Toric», Jaxom said over his shoulder in a cool indifferent greeting. The title, which was certainly proper as Toric had never been invited to take full rank by the other Lord Holders of Pern, brought the Southerner up short.

The White Dragon

In the novel Dragondrums it is known that Piemur was born to a herdsman in Keroon, which explains his familiarity with runnerbeasts. In a break from the previous canon, Gigi McCaffrey in her novel Dragon's Code mentions that the young man was born in Crom.

Another difference in this novel, in contradiction to the novels written by Anne McCaffrey and Todd McCaffrey, is the author's claims that Stupid, Piemur's runnerbeast he'd rescued on the Southern Continent during the events of Dragondrums, has six legs instead of the established four legs. The reason for the statement and addition of limbs to a Terran animal imported by the original colonists is unknown.

In Chapter Six the author states that B'naj's dragon, Seventh, is a brown, which is consistent with the information known about the rider and dragon who were involved in the scandal at the Smithcraft Hall when F'nor was injured when T'reb attempted to obtain a knife commissioned by a Lord Holder for a wedding. However, multiple times in the chapter Seventh is referred to as a blue dragon, which differs from the source content established by Anne McCaffrey.
