Lord Alessan of Ruatha Hold is a prominent character in Moreta and Nerilka's Story. He ruled Ruatha during the Plague of the Sixth Pass.
Bio
He was Searched by Fort Weyr as a child, but his father Lord Leef refused as he was the designated successor.
Alessan fell in love with and married Suriana, but sadly she died soon after from illness. Alessan was grief-stricken by her death and was reluctant for a long time to consider another marriage.
Alessan hosted his first Gather on the same day as Ista Hold was showing off a captured feline. This Gather was attended by Moreta, Weyrwoman of Fort Weyr, who Alessan met and fell in love with that day. Unfortunately the news of the plague ruined the festivities and Alessan felt to blame for the epidemic as the infected runnerbeast that had been found dead at the Gather had belonged to him.
As the Masterhealers, Masterharpers, Mastercrafters, dragonriders and Lord Holders attempted to find a cure for the plague Alessan found himself falling in love with Moreta, and she with him. During an outing to gather ingredients for a possible vaccination, Alessan and Moreta acknowledged their love and made love to one another.
After hearing the news of Moreta's death, Alessan was grief-stricken and wanted to die. However, he realised that he had a duty to his Hold to continue the Ruathan bloodline and beget a successor, so he agreed to marry Nerilka of Fort Hold, who had been disguised in Ruatha as the Healer 'Rill' for the duration of the plague. Nerilka made a bargain with him that as soon as she gave him an heir he could die and join Moreta. However, a month after Moreta's death Alessan realised that he was not ready to die and that he could find love with Nerilka, so he relieved Nerilka of her end of the bargain.
Ten years after Moreta's death, Alessan and Nerilka prepare for their first Gather. In Nerilka's Story, Nerilka notes that Alessan is not the same man as he had been before the plague, although he has recovered somewhat from Moreta's death. By this time she and Alessan have four sons and a daughter who they have named Moreta.
First Gather
Alessan hosted a wonderful Gather attended by many dragonriders, crafters, and holders. There were many decorations, stalls and pickets for racing, and a large dancing square.
Appearance and personality
He has dark hair, and green eyes flexed with brown, and a empathy for both dragons and runnerbeasts.
